Drug addiction and substance use disorder are personal to our staff, as many are also in recovery and have dedicated their careers to helping others. That’s just one element of the Augustine Recovery long-term addiction treatment that stands out.

Long-Term Care

Long-term drug addiction recovery provides the time needed to address root causes, build lasting coping skills, and foster meaningful behavioral change. It enhances relapse prevention, supports whole-person wellness, and prepares individuals for sustainable, sober living.

Gender-Specific Treatment

At Augustine Recovery, our men-only program creates a focused, distraction-free environment where individuals can tackle addiction head-on. By addressing the specific challenges men face, we empower them to rebuild their lives with strength, confidence, and purpose.

Whole Man Wellness

Our long-term recovery program includes daily fitness regimes and nutritional meals to heal the body and build physical resilience while the mind and soul go through transformations during treatment. Activities include swimming, surfing, and personal training.

Understanding Drug Addiction

Whether you’re ready to get help or just looking for information, we want to help you understand the underlying issues that lead to addiction, how treatment works, and what to expect. Men who struggle with drug addiction aren’t “weak” or lacking in willpower—they’re facing a complex challenge that requires support, understanding, and expert care to overcome.

They are also facing mortal risks:

  • Men are more likely to misuse drugs and develop addictions
  • Men are twice as likely to die from an overdose as women
  • Men between 25 and 34 years old are 147% more likely to die from an overdose

Seeking help is a courageous step toward reclaiming strength and purpose. Loved ones can learn a lot that helps in the recovery process, and that’s why we think it’s important to educate you about this chronic problem facing America.

Plus, Augustine Recovery embraces family as part of the recovery and healing process.

Defining Drug Addiction

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) defines drug addiction, also known as substance use disorder, as “a chronic, relapsing disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking, continued use despite harmful consequences, and long-lasting changes in the brain.”

That’s right—if someone you know is battling drug addiction, their brain structure has been altered, and it takes specialized care to rewire thoughts and behaviors toward sobriety.

This classification as a disease stems from the way drug addiction alters brain structure and function, impairing decision-making, self-control, and the ability to resist harmful substances, much like other chronic illnesses that affect physical health.

Drug Addiction vs. Drug Dependency

Being addicted to a drug and being dependent on a drug are two separate issues. Addictions begin when the body becomes dependent on a medication, even when legally prescribed. Not everyone who takes legal or illicit drugs will become addicted, but the slope is too slippery to avoid the warning signs.

Drug DependencyDrug Addiction
Involves physical reliance on a substance, where the body adapts to its presence.Characterized by compulsive drug-seeking behavior despite harmful consequences.
Leads to withdrawal symptoms if the substance is reduced or stopped abruptly.Involves significant changes in brain function, affecting motivation, reward, and self-control.
Can develop even with prescribed medications used as directed.Often includes physical dependency but extends to psychological and behavioral aspects.
Does not necessarily involve compulsive drug-seeking behavior or negative life impacts.Marked by the inability to stop using the substance, even with a desire to quit.

Most Common Drug Addictions in Men

Augustine Recovery works with drug addictions of various kinds. Drugs–legal and illicit—fall into several categories.

1. Depressants

  • Examples: Alcohol, benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax, Valium), barbiturates.
  • Effects: Slow down brain function and central nervous system activity, causing relaxation, drowsiness, or sedation.
  • Risk: Can lead to physical dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms.

2. Stimulants

  • Examples: Cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription amphetamines (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin).
  • Effects: Increase alertness, energy, and heart rate by stimulating the central nervous system.
  • Risk: Highly addictive, with potential for intense cravings and dangerous side effects like heart problems.

3. Opioids

  • Examples: Heroin, fentanyl, prescription painkillers (e.g., oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine).
  • Effects: Relieve pain and produce euphoria by interacting with opioid receptors in the brain.
  • Risk: Extremely addictive, with a high potential for overdose and dependence.

4. Hallucinogens

  • Examples: LSD, psilocybin (magic mushrooms), PCP.
  • Effects: Alter perception, mood, and thought processes, leading to hallucinations.
  • Risk: Less likely to cause physical addiction but can lead to psychological dependence.

5. Cannabinoids

  • Examples: Marijuana, synthetic cannabinoids (e.g., Spice, K2).
  • Effects: Euphoria, relaxation, altered sensory perception.
  • Risk: Chronic use can lead to dependence, especially with high-potency products.

6. Sedatives and Hypnotics

  • Examples: Sleep medications (e.g., Ambien, Lunesta).
  • Effects: Induce sleep or relaxation by slowing brain activity.
  • Risk: Can lead to dependency and withdrawal symptoms with prolonged use.

7. Dissociatives

  • Examples: Ketamine, DXM (found in cough syrups), PCP.
  • Effects: Distort perception of reality and create feelings of detachment.
  • Risk: Psychological dependence and harmful long-term effects on memory and cognition.

At Augustine Recovery, we specialize in treating co-occurring disorders, addressing both substance use disorders and underlying mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. Our integrated, holistic approach ensures that men receive comprehensive care for long-term recovery and improved well-being.

Common dual diagnoses include:

  • Depression: A frequent co-occurring condition, often exacerbated by substance use or withdrawal.
  • Anxiety Disorders: Includes generalized anxiety, panic disorders, and social anxiety, which can lead to self-medicating with substances.
  • Personality Disorders: Disorders like antisocial personality disorder or borderline personality disorder frequently co-occur with addiction.
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Men with ADHD are at higher risk of substance abuse, particularly stimulants.
  • Sleep Disorders: Chronic insomnia or other sleep disorders often drive substance misuse for perceived relief.
